I don't get it. How come the PS2 is still outselling the competition?
After all everyone by now has one. It should be Xbox or GCN beating the PS2 at least in weekly sales.

Order stays same, but numbers drop.

January 12 - January 18, 2004

Alright! Xbox is only down by 140,000 to the PS2..

Seriously.. look at the weekly numbers, notice how much PS2 sales fall drasticly with seasons and after holidays..

But yet, the Xbox decline isn't so much compared to it's weekly average..

It shows that in Japan, the Xbox is purchased by mostly hardcore collector types that make purchases regardless of holidays.

The Xbox "Pure White Limited" Edition will be available in Japan from January 30 to February 6, so we'll soon see what kind of effect that has on Xbox sales.

well atleast the XBOX is making progess. it used to be outsold by the PS1 but it seems to have taken quite a lead over PS1 from December.

Its mabe because in japon microsoft isn't as popular as in North America and Sony and Nintendo (japanies brands) are more popular and way cheaper because of the shiping fees.

GameCube - 10,698
Game Boy Advance - 10,159
Xbox - 801

It seems that the "Pure White Limited" Xbox was not included in that sales count. 1000 units were produced and supposedly sold out very fast.

GBA SP extends its lead over PS2, while GameCube continues to slip (a little).

Ninja Gaiden is coming in March for Xbox. It should make some difference.

GameCube slips again, and GBASP stays at the top.

Xbox was the only one to show growth for the week.

+10 lol

I just tried the Ninja Gaiden Demo and it is really good. I am not sure how the series did in Japan though..if it was liked, maybe it could be a system seller?

Though, it did not sound like the Japanese liked Otogi..maybe they do not want to try a game that is unknown on a system they do not like?

Anyway, Xbox has some good games coming up so hopefully it will increase the market over in Japan, if not, I think Japan's market for Xbox is nearly dead :/

It is like Metroid Prime for GC. Great game, got amazing reviews and the rest of the world, it sold pretty well. But only 80k copies in Japan? It is like they are not buying the game because it is not Japanese..bah (well, the other games in the series were not well liked as well..guess Japanese gamers like to be told what to do in games instead of the free exploring :/)

Couldnt agree with you more, Japan likes their homemade products.
February 28, 2004, 8:01 AM CST by Cipher
Ever occured to you the reason why GC and PS2 are selling better than XBox is because there are some games there that will never reach the U.S. That are very good.
February 29, 2004, 8:08 AM CST by Tzyr to Cipher
I was not at all talking about PS2 or GC doing better then Xbox. I was refering to the 800 Xboxs sold and the fact that Xbox could do better (well hopefully).

With the games that Xbox is releasing soon, hopefully it will give Japanese gamers more reason to buy it. I mean, look how many people are buying PS2s and most of the games that PS2 are releasing are sequals or games similar to ones already out..

In the very short time that this thread has been alive (dec 15th) 1,048,418 japs have purchased a PS2. I looked up jap population and got a figure of around 127,900,000.

In the 3 months this thread has been around almost 1% of all japanesse people have purchased a PS2. Considering that the PS2 has been around for a very long time and most people are likely to have got one in its first 1-2 years these are still very good figures, you would expect nearly everyone in Japan to own one by now.
March 5, 2004, 4:50 AM CST by Armoured_Chicken to one_grim_reaper
Its unbelieveable. How could they buy that many? Its crazy. Console loving bunch of people they are. And how many have bought a xbox in this time period? Hardly even 50,000.

Well you also have to figure that in Japan, they may be buying multiple special edition PS2s which could account for high sales. It may not be one PS2 per person.

I heard that they buy PS2's for mothers and fathers-to-be. It's supposed to bring good blessings, prosperity, and good luck.

Monster Hunter for PS2 looks very good, saw a video at my friend's. I bet it'll prolly sell some more PS2 units over there in Japan even though it seems all of them have one lol. I don't get what's with these japanese ppl. We buy their products everyday: Sony, Panasonic, Toshiba, PS2, GC, GBA, Toyota, Honda etc., yet the bastards hardly buy American products at all for the console market! Damn nationalists lol!

The difference isn't actually as big as you might think. Not when you actually look closely at th numbers. If we look at the highest and lowest weekly sales (of the ones posted before you made this post) then it comes out like this:

Sales drop between December 22 to January 18:

PS2 = 68.3% drop
XBox = 58.6% drop

These numbers are too close to come to any conslusions anout demographic. If we look at later numbers XBox has actually dropped significantly more then PS2. Between December 22 and April 4 XBox sales dropped 85%! PS2's sales dropped only 65% in the same period. So if anything this shows that overall PS2 sales are effected less by seasons then XBox sales.

Lol, its crazy over in Japan. XBOX's closest battle is with a console from the previous generation...
July 14, 2004, 8:49 PM CST by seishinbyou
Thought I would add something from the perspective of someone whom lives in Japan.

The Xbox doesn't sell well because the games for it do not appeal to Japanese gamers, and there is a very limited selection of games (as compared to the plethora of PS2 games available). Japanese gamers love their RPGs and quirky action games, soccer games, pachinko/pachislot simulators, etc.

Price is not an issue. Some shops in Yokohmaa have basically marked down their Xboxes to the point of practically dumping them so they can "make room for the incoming mass of PS2 and GBA stock". That was spoken by the manager of the shop in Yokohama where I managed to pick up an Xbox for 3000 yen (I don't have any games for it, but I have one). EDIT> I don't mean to imply all Xboxes are 3000 yen; only the place I went to that was dumping them. They sell "new" for 17,000 yen or so. About what a PS2 costs (maybe a tad less unless you are talking about used hardware)

If they had a better selection of games more suited to the tastes of the Japanese market, they would be faring a lot better. Sorry, but "Halo", or really any FPS for that matter, doesn't cut it here (though don't get me wrong, I found it fun, at least). Perhaps this will change over time, though.

Heh, I still see the Wonderswan is hanging on. It still sells because of the Squaresoft library they released for it; most of the other games stunk, though (IMHO).
July 14, 2004, 11:23 PM CST by seishinbyou
In terms of the handheld market, GBASP = win (At least for now; we'll see how the DS and PSP fare). There is a venerable cornucopia of games available for it, though a tad overpriced in my opinion (the average "new" game runs around 4000 yen except for those Famicom mini games which are half that, or 2000 yen a piece). Also, flash carts and cables are not so hard to find, especially if you want to venture to Akihabara. This has resulted in a good number of people buying a game, copying it/flashing it, and then just returning it to the store. No wonder prices are high for gba games in Japan.

In terms of consoles, the Famicom (known as the NES in North America) still stirs sweet sweet memories for the game industry here, enough so that they have "Neo-fami" systems out which are basically generic Famicom players in a small black casing. They even have Famicom adapters for your GBA so you can play the old Famicom carts directly.

The Gamecube seems to be primarily targeted at the younger audience, which may be why it hasn't found a real base with the older Japanese gamers, though there are enough "interesting" games on there that have generated decent albeit small sales for the older crowd.

In general, Nintendo is seen as a positive figure in the JP community. The only real "failures" to speak were the N64 and Virtual Boy. Okay, "failure" may be too strong a word for the N64, but it did pittance in Japan relative to other systems at the time, and the library of games was really nothing to write home about except for the high-profile games like Pokemon stadium (was that the right title?), Zelda, etc. Most of the other games were boring Shogi simulators, dating sims, or text-adventure-with-still-photos games...and that damn Pikachu-with-a-headset game.

Mind you, on the flip side, while the N64 didn't do so hot here, the Sega Saturn did, but that was mostly due to a lot of Japanese-only RPGs that the local gamers loved and the rest of the world never got...nor wanted perhaps.

This really isn't surprising anymore. I am curious what the Gamecube sales will be like for the next week since Paper Mario RPG just came out.

A lot of high profile and/or well-hyped games for the PS2 and GBA have been over the media lately...well, actually, they always are, which explains the constant sales coming in for those systems. (Most notably for the GBA, we have Puyo puyo Fever, Bokura no Taiyou 2 (Boktai 2), Full Metal Alchemist 2, and others out, with a few more on the horizon (Final Fantasy 1+2 out this week, Super Mario Ball coming soon).

I hardly ever see an Xbox commercial on TV. It is extremely rare, whereas I can expect to see commercials for Gamecube,GBA, or PS2 games almost every commercial break (They even advertise at Karaoke palaces; in the "waiting period" between selecting songs, it scrolls the most popular songs, and then shows some random commercials, one of which is the one for "Digial Devil Saga" for the PS2).

The Wonderswan sales are still kind-of surprising; I am seriously starting to wonder if those sales include sales of "used" Wonderswans. There are Wonderswan "bundles" in just about every game store I have been to. Usually, it is something along the lines of Wonderswan Crystal + 4 games (Final Fantasy 1, 2, Front Mission, Saga) for 3000 yen.
July 25, 2004, 8:22 PM CST by embargiel to seishinbyou
A Wonderswan bundled with 4 games is only sold for mere 3000 yen? That's merely around 27 bucks you know! I would buy it if they had the same offer here. You can't even get the latest GBA games with that kind of money.
July 26, 2004, 2:35 AM CST by seishinbyou to embargiel
I agree, that is a very good deal. I bought a Wonderswan Color when they were new (I bought the Final Fantasy 1 box set), and enjoyed it and many other games very much despite some of the quirks of the system (no backlight, and light source I used created a huge glare and it was still hard to see the screen except in good lighting, there was no built-in headphone jack; you had to plug in an adapter (which is what I used to plug in the light :( ) and no volume "dial"; only a "sound" button that toggled between 3 levels of sound. Still, when it lasts 10 or so hours on a single AA battery, in decent lighting, it is a blast to play. Given the hot weather and people travelling about to cooler places this summer, I couldn't blame anyone for picking up one of the Wonderswan combos for the road; after all, 4 decent games with the system for 3000 yen is a much better deal than paying 10000 yen for a GBASP alone (well, it is less if used, but still...)

Even some of the older black & white Wonderswan games were fun (i.e. Chocobo no Fushigi na Dungeon, Beatmania, etc.)

Also, unrelated, but people do buy multiple of the same system. One guy I work with has 3 PS2s in his house; 1 for each of his kids and 1 for himself.

3 PS2's? Sheesh. No wonder PS2 is still making so much money. He probably buys multiple copies of the games too, but it sounds like the guy has cash to burn.
July 26, 2004, 2:48 AM CST by seishinbyou
Many salarymen do have lots of disposable income, but no free time to do anything with it... At least his kids have something to do (he admits he rarely has a chance to play on his own PS2).

He doesn't have multiple copies of the games, though, I'm pretty sure, but I wouldn't be surprised if there are others doing that. It is far more common for GBA games to sell multiple copies for the same household (I regularly see kids on the trains, each with their own GBASP; sometimes a link cable connecting them, or the wireless one used in the newer Pokemon games).

EDIT> spoke too soon; he said he has 2 copies of Gran Turismo 3 because one came in a special "racing bundle" PS2 (with some force feedback steering wheel controller) after he already bought the game for his oldest son.

I was wondering if these are Japanese sales only because I knew the GCN was second for a long time but it seems to slaughter XBOX which is now second yes or is this just Japanese sales cause I know the XBOX doesent do to well in Japan with sales like his shouldent the GCN be FAR ahead of XBOX?
August 14, 2004, 9:56 PM CST by seishinbyou to SEGAMAN
These are Japanese sales only. i.e. the land where the Xbox gets dumped on more than a German dungeon porn star.

Oh, and here is a scary event I saw last week; a kid on the train to Yokohama had 2 GBA SPs. He was playing one, turned it off a few minutes later, and played on the other one afterwards. I guess switching cartridges was just too much for him.

Something that still kind-of puzzles me is the sales of the Gameboy Advance (not the SP). Just about everyone that has a GBA has the GBASP model except for a lot of the white-collar workers I see at work and on my way to work. Granted, a GBA used is now only around 3000 yen as compared with a GBASP that is just a hair under 10000 yen new, but still...maybe it is the grip?

As for the Wonderswan Color, maybe they run out of those special bundles of Wonderswan+4 games (haha)

But, in all honesty, from the point of view of the average gamer here, GBA(SP) and PS2 reign supreme, with masses of titles released every week, many of which being the games people want to play. Xbox is dead for all intensive purposes; more and more shops have dumped their stock in wicker barrels and cardboard boxes, discounted them, and are basically giving them away. The *only* game advertised and one for which shops are taking pre-orders is "Dead or Alive Ultimate".

Gamecube has had a small surge in popularity with Paper Mario RPG getting much attention (It is a very enjoyable game, though, from personal experience)

This does make me concerned about one possible scenario for the next generation of consoles and handhelds : That the Japanese and American/European/Australian markets will be split; what is popular on one side won't be on the other. In other words, that 2 separate game markets would be forged. Kind of like the old days back before the NES found its' way to western shores (so to speak)

Man.. so where do all of those new XBOX game releases go? If you browse the XBOX Japan website, you'll notice a lot of Japanese exclusive games. Like Nacchi no Othello, Ayappe no Go, (made up names) etc.
September 20, 2004, 9:30 PM CST by seishinbyou to khaid
There are still some game shops that, although they don't sell Xbox hardware, still have a stock of a few Xbox games (as is the case with the GameStation chain as of late). In some cases, though, they will only take pre-orders for them and only order in what they know they have sold, because Xbox games have a tendency to just sit on shelves here.

As figures, the numbers are lower the week of 6 to 12. Possibly back to school reasons, but more that nothing notable has been released recently on any platform (except Pokemon Emerald, for which I had a legion of 13 year old kids trample me at Toys R Us to get). A new Fire Emblem game is out at the beginning of October, though, and I know quite a few people are waiting for that one. DOA Ultimate for Xbox is out in Oct. too, so who knows, maybe Xbox will get a surge in sales.

Oh yes, odd point, but I noticed that Toys R Us in Japan doesn't seem to carry Xbox, yet they have a whole shelf of useless GBA accessories (i.e. GBA "lunch box" case, GBA Utility belt, etc.)

GBASP sales may be pretty high for the next week with 2 high profile games released (the new Fire Emblem game and Mawaru : Made in Wario (the second Warioware game for the GBA)

I would be very surprised if the Xbox (or any future MS console) ever becomes even remotely popular in Japan. Xbox is very PC-like in terms of the games it offers, which just isn't that palatable to the Japanese; I guess for lack of a better word you could say it's for "cultural" reasons. The Japanese, generally speaking, have little or no interest in first person shooters, so I doubt Halo 2 will do much to peak their interest in the console. The size and styling of a console also appear to be more important to Japanese consumers than graphical power. Moreover, I think Japanese nationalism is a factor. They would prefer to buy from Japanese companies.

CSteve, PS2 and gamecube saw a big rise in sales as well? why was this? especially PS2...from a average of 20,000 a week, to 115,000, was it due to their new slimline version? and Gamecube, what caused thier boost?

Edit: on second thought, GC didnt gain a big boost...my mistake.
November 12, 2004, 5:01 PM CST by Mister101
1800% increase in console sales from the previous month, guess the Japanese like DOA. They probably crossed their yearly total in Xbox software sold in that week.
November 15, 2004, 2:28 AM CST by seishinbyou to da_deadly_sniper
The huge jump in PS2 sales is most definitely from the new slimline version. Those things went on sale and sold out in most (but not all) places. A few places had them up for sale the night before they were supposed to be officially sold, but eh, it doesn't seem like anyone cared.

The Halo2 scenario is amusing. There were actually commercials for it on TV. Yes, a commercial...for an Xbox game...in Japan :O

I'm wondering how much of that figure of 4959 Xboxs accounts for DOA...probably most of it. It won't be until the next week's results that we see sales due to Halo2 and remnants of DOA. After that, who knows.

This is a good step for M$, though. Perhaps the next Xbox console can attract a fair share of the market if they can keep bringing the games out that people here want to/actually will play.

EDIT> The GBA-SP is still going to hold strong with the titles like the new Zelda game and Kingdom Hearts : Chain of Memories, though after this wave, who knows. I'm pretty sure every kid in Japan has 2 or 3 GBA-SPs already (and that isn't a complete exhaduration based on previous experiences on trains and buses).

You'd better believe it; Dragon Quest 8 is sold out at just about every place they are pushing it, and that includes convenience stores, where you can get alcohol, fireworks, and PS2/PS2 games all in one place.

Add that to the DQ8 commercials on every few minutes it seems, and it all adds up. The day it went on sale, people were outside their stores with tables full of just DQ8 *screaming* at people to hurry up and buy it before they were all sold out, and people were...just scary.

Also, there was a brief spot on it tonight on the news reporting it had already broken 3 million copies, but I'm not sure how accurate that report is. Famitsu will have the total numbers next week, I guess.

The problem was that the PSP was sold out just about everywhere (Read: Sony didn't make enough units). The PSP is still in high demand, but all orders are on reserve. Most shops around here can't get them in until the end of this month, with a few, including one near where I live, say they have no real expectations about getting more units in before the new year.

Sony messed up. You still can't get PSPs even if you want them due to shortages everywhere. Lord knows where the latest numbers came from. People basically gave up waiting and went to the DS if they didn't already have one. I have both now, so I could care less, though :)

/me loves both Sawaru : Made in Wario and Ridge Racers

It is far to early to determing the fate of the PSP. Once Sony actually can get enough units out for everyone to be able to get one (if they want), then we'll see. It's not like the Xbox where there are units but noone wants them; it is a case of people really want them, but they can't get one.

Well, the DS reign in Japan was awfully short in the handheld market. PSP needs another month or so of steady supplies to take total portable sales overall. No surprise that the PS2 is still #1 over there, but XBox in the lowly 7th and final spot? I hope they have a better plan for Japn when XBox 2 arrives.

It's interesting to see just how much the Gameboy sales have decreased in Japan in the face of the DS. Where as, in America, the DS is being treated as a seperate brand, and not necessarilly the sucessor to the Gameboy. Nintendo is hoping to use the Gameboy and DS line in duality, let's hope Europe recieves the DS in the same way the American market has.

On a side note: It's suprising, and slightly alarming, how quickly the PSP has asserted itself in Japan. The DS isn't going to fade out of the picure by any means, but I wasn't expecting to see the PSP in the number 1 spot, at all, little lone so soon.

Wow, add up all the non-Sony machine numbers and they don't come close to either the PSP or PS2 individual numbers. The next-gen console race in Japan in 2006 will show better competition than this I hope.
March 24, 2005, 10:45 PM CST by qwerty710710 to JoeBlow
Doesn't really matter DS is still bitch slappint the psp in Japan. Look at the early numbers PSP couldn't touch the DS.
March 27, 2005, 11:13 PM CST by seishinbyou to qwerty710710
The DS had a mass lead in sales in the beginning due having a head start to the market, and initial shortages of Sony's units before the new year. Looking around the shops here in Saitama and down in Tokyo is not instilling me with confidence in the DS; used DS units everywhere marked down to almost the 10,000 yen point (they are 14,800 yen new), and used PSP usits are still uncommon (at least in comparison with the mass of used DS units available). Add to the fact that that PSP has been outselling the DS every week for the past 2 months and it the scene takes on a very different look. There are signs in the windows and in front of electonic shops when they get a new PSP shipment in; the DS has posters and other advertisements, yes, but the shops don't go out of their way to say they have them. At the Sofmap in Akihabara, everytime they put out their small mountain of PSP boxes, you can see it gradually disappear throughout the day.

I don't have anything against the DS; it is in a much more enviable position than the Xbox in Japan, and is a very fun unit. I enjoyed going through Mario64 again, and Pac-Pix was all right. Another Code was a good use of the touch screen technology, but regardless, people are picking up Sony units in Japan more than anything right now.

Granted, I imagine if (supposedly) Squeenix releases FF3 for the DS, you are going to see a *huge* jump in DS sales (as with any *killer* title in Japan, I suppose), but as the situation is presented now, and has been for the past 2 months.
March 31, 2005, 5:17 PM CST by kingneod to qwerty710710
and I don't think it will be able to touch the DS this week as DS sales are approximately 54,000 in Japan this week as reported on gamestop. Seeing as PSP has been selling around 43,000 steadily, I see a win for the DS this week
March 31, 2005, 5:29 PM CST by Quaid to kingneod
Seeing has how they haven't even sold out of the launch shipment in the US, this reaffirms my suspicions that much of the Japanese sales were actually exports.

It probably won't last, seeing as specialty color releases never really do. It might stabalize DS sales a smidge higher then were they've been for the past few weeks, but the PSP is still going to overtake it at this rate.

It's also interesting to see that despite the huge increase in DS units sold, the PSP number were totally unaffected and remained at their level from last week and the week before. Good news for Sony, really.
April 1, 2005, 9:52 AM CST by Quaid to JoeBlow
Well, the PSP reign in Japan was awfully short in the handheld market. DS needs another month or so of steady supplies to take total portable sales overall. Oh wait, they alrady have that, too :P

Looking at the PSP vs GBASP + GBA numbers for the last couple of weeks, Id say it might be a good bet that the GBMicro will beat the PSP when it comes out and through a few years maybe (if it doesnt just put it in the grave altogether). Weve already seen the GBASP surge ahead of the PSP once, so its not unreasonable to think new hardware wont do it again.

What really suprises me is that the PSP died so early. I was thinking it would take Nintendo's DS at least 2 years before it was the dominant portable console. It just goes to show how the trend is going, and it's going FASTER than expected.

Perhaps if Sony dropped the price of the PSP to $50 it might sell better. That might not even help them because of the DS's superiority in technology and it's more enticing game library.

B-B-B-B But the PSP is so beautiful! Why is the DS outselling the PSP 5 to 1? That's not right! It looks like the PSP's market life is shorter than its battery life.

Strong DS sales. In fact, I think they are stronger than the DS' launch week in Japan. I wonder if Nintendo is having trouble keeping up with demand in Japan

I think the PSP sales went bad becouse of lots of returns due to design problems and components used like the dead pixel screen and button problems. The time to fix and maybe redisign the error.

There was no way that sony could challenge the handheld market. Nintendo's mastery over this market was displayed through the NDS which i recall that many ill informed gamers and journalists alke was writing this device off as a failure and out of touch.I'm glad that it shut those fools up. The PSP is still a nifty device though,it just doesn't have the games and originality as the NDS has at the moment. Maybe he fact it's just a mobile PS2 in some respects, has something to do with it as well...

This is when a Sony Fanboy might say, "Well, the DS reign in Japan was awfully short in the handheld market."

Expect DS to go back to Weekly #1 when supply picks up.

One has to assume that the lower numbers are due entirely to shortages. The DS's momentum has been steady all along, and good software is continuing to roll out over in Japan.

You'd think with a DS shortage, PSP sales might have spiked a little. I guess its true that no one in Japan cares about the PSP.

I can't wait until Nintendo restocks DS's in Japan. I'm getting pretty tired of Sony biased sites and articles claiming that the PSP is now going to control the handheld scene in Japan. I guess the DS selling a million units in a month and then having a true shortage aren't real factors to these sites and article authors. The selective ignorance is pretty annoying.

I think unless the PSP drops out bad that we wont see the NDS back to the number one spot until March 2, 2006..... Why you ask its because of this

People will wait for it

With the N64 and Gamecube, Nintendo tried to compete directly with its competitors on the technological front and lost. However, with the DS, it offers consumers a unique game product that relies less on advanced technology than pure innovation, which has been a tremendous success for Nintendo. Considering the Revolution will follow the same principles of the DS, the future of Nintendo looks bright! If you can’t compete in the conventional game market, create a new one!

well, the light had a shipment of (I think) around 95,000 units in its first week, which sold out with in the first couple hours. So I'd assume DS sales will be over 100k next week and possibly for the rest of march if Nintendo keeps up w/100k shipped per week.
