Question is...

How many PS2s were defective and replacements?

How many Xboxs were used only for Linux boxes?
January 20, 2004, 12:29 PM CST by mOnkEynuTz to Traderx25
It's still a sale for the respective company thought. It would impact game sales later on but the company has sold that many consoles no matter the intention or use.

We might as well include Nokia N-Gage. The regional data is not available, but Nokia includes the worldwide total sales in its financial reports.

By the end of the quarter, Nokia had cumulatively sold 1.3 million N-Gage devices.

http://www.nokia.com/2004/Q4/
That's 1.3 million N-Gage sold by the end of 2004.

It's time for a mini-update with worldwide shipments.

Worldwide Hardware Sales (End of June 2005)
PS2 - 91 million
Xbox - 21.9 million
GameCube - 18.76 million
Game Boy Advance - 67.77 million
Nintendo DS - 6.65 million
PSP - 5.06 million

Updated N-Gage stats are not yet available.
November 25, 2005, 4:34 PM CST by chairmansteve
It's time for another mini-update of hardware shipments.

Worldwide Hardware Sales (End of September 2005)
PS2 - 96.01 million
Xbox - 22.5 to 23 million (unofficially estimated)
GameCube - 19.31 million
Game Boy Advance - 70.04 million
Nintendo DS - 8.83 million
PSP - 8.81 million
N-Gage - 2 million

Since updated Xbox sales numbers are not expected until early 2006, I estimated from 22.5 to 23 million. Xbox 360 numbers should also be available in early 2006.

The figures are shipments (or "sales" to stores) using official manufacturer numbers, not from third party organizations such as NPD, Media Create, Chart Track, etc.
December 2, 2005, 9:05 AM CST by Avinash_Tyagi to chairmansteve
Then that explains why the Sony PSP Numbers are overly high, its their own released figures which we know are bogus.

May 25, 2006, 4:27 AM CST by Quaid to Avinash_Tyagi
Yeah, Sony sales figures look to be inflated by 25% or more, atleast. Makes you wonder about not only PSP sales, but also PS2.
May 25, 2006, 7:16 AM CST by The_Joker to Quaid
If you read their financial reports you'll also see that Sony's shipments are production shipments, that is every unit shipped from the factories. Even the ones currently stored in warehouses count, not just the ones "sold" to retailers.
July 27, 2006, 2:59 AM CST by chairmansteve
Worldwide Hardware Sales (End of June 2006)
PS2 - 106.23 million
Xbox - 24.5 million (unofficially estimated)
GameCube - 21 million
Xbox 360 - 5 million
Game Boy Advance - 75.81 million
Nintendo DS - 21.27 million
PSP - 19.05 million

DS will probably lead PSP from now on.
July 27, 2006, 2:34 PM CST by NFreak to chairmansteve
Are those numbers misleading or has the PSP really shipped 19 million units?
July 27, 2006, 2:55 PM CST by Quaid to NFreak
Sony has manufactured 19 million PSP's, essentially. They could be sitting anywhere. Sony doesn't care, as long as it fluffs up their numbers.

PS3 - 1.84 million
Game Boy Advance - 78.86 million
Nintendo DS - 35.61 million
PSP - 24.7 million

Not many PSP units were shipped compared to last year in Q4.
And Xbox 360 has a 7.21 million lead in the next-gen race.

Worldwide Hardware Sales (End of March 2007)

PSP - 25.39 million

With 5.5 million PS3, Sony definitely does not have a supply shortage.
October 25, 2007, 5:19 PM CST by chairmansteve
Sony changed its data from production shipments to retail shipments a few quarters ago. So only PS3 now has lifetime total numbers from Sony. Maybe it's time to drop the old systems from the chart anyway.

Worldwide Hardware Sales (End of 2006)
Xbox 360 - 10.4 million
Wii - 3.19 million
PS3 - 1.7 million
PS2 - 113.68 million
GBA - 78.86 million
DS - 35.61 million
PSP - 22.09 million

Worldwide Hardware Sales (End of March 2007)
Xbox 360 - 11 million
Wii - 5.84 million
PS3 - 3.5 million
PS2 - 116.06 million
GBA - 79.46 million
DS - 40.29 million
PSP - 23.69 million

Worldwide Hardware Sales (End of June 2007)
Xbox 360 - 11.6 million
Wii - 9.27 million
PS3 - 4.2 million
PS2 - 118.72 million
GBA - 80.02 million
DS - 47.27 million
PSP - 25.82 million

Worldwide Hardware Sales (End of September 2007)
Xbox 360 - 13.4 million
Wii - 13.17 million
PS3 - 5.5 million
PS2 - 122 million
GBA - 80.48 million
DS - 53.64 million
PSP - 28.4 million

(Oct-2008): I found PS2 and PSP retail shipments. I think the data is correct. But since I'm not 100% sure that the published figures from Sony were sales as of June 30, 2008, these charts might be ~2 million above the actual number.
November 27, 2007, 7:42 PM CST by fiacracka to chairmansteve
thank you SO much chairmansteve, for providing all of this data. it really helps me out at work.

wondering if you have updated worldwide installed bases for PSP?

i was able to find the nintendo handhelds in the nintendo thread, but didn't see a sony thread.

i have to update US and worldwide installed bases for every console on a quarterly basis and it is a total nightmare! (NPD vs. financial statements, sales vs. shipments)
January 31, 2008, 12:56 AM CST by chairmansteve
Worldwide Hardware Sales (End of 2007)
Wii - 20.13 million
Xbox 360 - 17.7 million
PS3 - 10.4 million
PS2 - 127.4 million
GBA - 80.72 million
DS - 64.79 million
PSP - 34.16 million

Wii took the lead. PS3 is where 360 was a year ago. The stage has been set for an interesting hardware sales race over the next two years.

Regional shipment data hasn't been released from Sony or Microsoft, but Xbox 360 still has the lead in North America based on NPD.

Sony quarterly results should be out in the first week of April, as for February NPD sales, those come out next thursday.
March 7, 2008, 12:44 AM CST by scruffdog to Chris_Redfield
Typically corporations don't announce quarterly results until the 3rd or 4th week of the month after a quarter close. Since this is a fiscal annual closing period for Sony we won't likely see it until early May

Dear Chairmansteve,

where did you get all these figures from? What is your source? I am looking for total handheld games market as from 2007. Do you have "official" numbers? Or could you please give me the source of the figures?

many thanks for your reply.

From the earnings reports of Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony. Just go to their sites, and you will find all their LTD sales figures there.

Nintendo:
http://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/pdf/2009/annual0903e.pdf
(scroll down the pdf to the annual "Worldwide Consolidated Sales Units in Millions" graph, then add up the annual sales)

Do the same for DS sales in the same pdf file.

Sony:
PS3

(add up all the figures in the FY column on the right, then add Q1, FY2009 to the totals)

PSP

Microsoft:

I have to say, I'm curious to see if PS3 gained any ground on Xbox360 after their first Christmas season with the Slim model and the new price point. I don't think PS3 will come that close to matching total 360 sales, but the gap will certainly shrink significantly.
December 18, 2009, 5:08 AM CST by GafferUK1981 to Hawk4x4
I agree, the PS3 won't be overtaking the 360 anytime soon but if we go back 2 years I think a lot of people would be surprised by just how much ground the PS3 has made up. I can quite confidently say now that the only difference between the 2 is the 1 year head start the 360 had on the market.
